Birthing of Stewardship
Back in 2021 I was invited to join Birthing of Giants, a well-run and worthwhile organization, helping CEOs grow their companies. The overall premise behind the movement, in the minds of some (or most) attendees is to break the barriers to unlimited growth potential ultimately selling the company for tremendous wealth gain.
So, here’s the question: Are we business owners or are we rather, “business stewards”? Each small and medium-sized business founder must choose. No one can speak for all start-up business organizations as these all differ in family situations, goals and complexity.
Our company was created 30 years ago with an original idea: to enable workers to work from home, enjoy a career and a life! So, where did this idea come from? Was it a born visionary gift (it was 20 years ahead of its time) or did the idea come from on high?
This morning during my daily prayer and Bible study time, the Scripture was on Luke 18:18-30 about the rich young man asking Jesus how to inherit eternal life. You can read the Scripture on your own. The point of the story is this young man was wealthy materially yet poor spiritually.
Back to stewardship. Birthing of Giants is about forward thinking toward each year of growth goals and updating these objectives continually. It is a very good business growth strategy. So, here is the key question: What does succession look like? Do we grow the company dreaming of reaching great heights then sell to perhaps a venture capital firm or larger competitor, thank the staff for their hard work and go off to the sunset healthy, wealthy and wise? “For me and my house”, the answer is no! I have more than enough. Also, helping to grow this organization has been one of the greatest joys in my life.
So here are my current one-year goals:
1. Horizontal business expansion with no more than 50% from a few large clients.
2. 30% increase in sales.
3. The next generation of company leaders prepared to take the leadership mantel for future company endeavors.
At the right time, I will be totally satisfied going off into the sunset knowing that this wonderful company is in good hands and thanking God for the privilege to lead. The horizon approaches.
