The Times I Said No
During the Iran-Contra scandal hearings in the 1980’s, former Marine Colonel Oliver North stated, “Salute smartly and charge up the hill!” Yes, as a former Marine myself, I can appreciate military obedience. Some companies, however, expect the same obedience from their staff.
The Wall Street Journal Article of June 16, 2025, entitled “How to say no at work” caused me to reflect on my previous corporate 23-year experience and recalling seven significant episodes of saying “no” to corporate supervisor orders.
Let me state that the company I worked for is well known and well respected. Furthermore, with a generous 401K program, during my tenure, my wife and I enjoy those benefits during our senior years.
The cause of these corporate request’s stems from stock market expectations on earnings per share. During each of these episodes, as an accountant, my conscience ruled and accounting principles (under my purview) were followed. The detailed events are being redacted avoiding the airing of dirty laundry from years ago at a terrific organization.
Looking back, I can say that holding my ground six of the seven times resulted in pardons. The seventh likely accelerated my ending tenure. However, I can confidently state that my integrity is intact and my hands are clean.
Do say No where warranted, make your day!
